Frequently Asked Questions

What ages do you teach?
My students are mostly adults and teenagers. I also offer Core Lessons for some younger students.

Apply To Start to find out which type of lessons are suitable for you.
What level do I need to be?
I welcome all experience levels - from total beginners to long time players.

Every lesson I teach is customised around the student, so you'll feel comfortable whatever your level.
How often should I take lessons?
It's easy to take lessons as often as you like with the online booking system. Most students take one lesson per week.

You can reserve a weekly slot to guarantee your space.
How long are lessons?
• Lessons for adults & teenagers last 55 minutes.
• Core Lessons for younger students last 45 minutes.

Lessons start hourly, so please make sure to arrive on time.

If you're bringing someone for their lesson, please feel welcome and encouraged to sit in.
Do I need to bring anything?
Feel free to bring your own sticks. Everything else is ready to go.

(Remember to bring a payment card - ApplePay on iPhones works too).
What should I expect in my first lesson?
We'll have a chat and work out where your playing is currently at, talk about the kind of things you wish you could do and get the ball rolling.

Importantly though - don't worry. I'm focused on keeping you in the golden zone where you're comfortably challenged, but never out of your depth.
Do you offer grades?
I'm happy to offer grades if that's something you're interested in (100% pass rate) - but it's important to understand that grades are to music what paint by numbers is to art. They're an exercise in following instructions, not thinking for yourself.

That's not to say you shouldn't take grade exams - you may need the qualification for something in particular. But if you don't, I recommend focusing on real playing instead.
Do you teach advanced lessons?
Absolutely. I have a number of advanced students that come for guidance on technique, practice plans, style development and more.

Whether you have specific goals, want some general guidance or need help getting past a plateau - I'm happy to help.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Please give at least 7 days notice if you need to change or cancel a booking.

• One late (under 7 day) change or cancellation is allowed every 6 months, free of charge.
• Subsequent bookings cancelled or changed with less than 7 days notice are charged in full.

I must charge in full for missed lessons.

The Teacher

Picture
Hi, I’m Mike Glozier.

I first picked up a pair of sticks in September 1998. Since then I’ve been lucky enough to go on to record with my heroes, appear on stages in front of more people that I’ve ever seen and even appear in a series of bloody awful (but lucrative) TV ads.

And all that stuff is great - but it’s not the reason I play drums. I play drums because I love playing drums. Everything else is just a little bonus on the side.

Drums are a difficult instrument to master. For me that’s part of the appeal - it’s what makes them cool. There’s plenty of good guitarists, loads of great pianists - but elite level drummers are rare.

Part of the reason for that is purely mechanical - whereas most instruments require 2 limb coordination, drums require 4. But it’s not just that - it’s also that drums are so different from other instruments, that people don’t really know how to go about learning them. Teachers usually apply the same approach as other instruments - paperwork, exercises and exams.

But drums don’t work like that. When was the last time you saw a drummer reading sheet music? Did Buddy Rich or John Bonham learn out of exercise books? Did Keith Moon take his exams?

It’s clear that a totally different approach is needed to make progress on drums. That’s why I teach - because I find the traditional methods so, so frustratingly out of touch that I can’t help but instinctively try and fix things.

Of course - that doesn't mean my lessons are a good fit for everybody. We all know people that like to stick to the traditional ways. People that believe if it’s boring, it must be good for you - and those people are best suited carrying on how they are.

But if you’re willing to give something different a try, I’m excited to help you. Maybe you’re just starting out. Maybe you play a bit already - or maybe you’re an experienced drummer that’s been playing for 20 years.

Whatever the case, let's throw out everything that clutters up the road ahead and get on with what really matters.
